The Family Holiday Association (FHA) in the United Kingdom (UK) created today’s chosen random holiday. This charity provides free day trips and seaside breaks to families who have been struggling with things like domestic violence, grief, illness, or mental health issues. Those families are typically referred to the FHA by other charities, social workers, and teachers.

The recent Northern Lights phenomenon reached as far south as the Pacific island of New Caledonia. This is the first time in recorded history that citizens of that area witnessed naked-eye auroras and cements the May 10th electromagnetic storm as one of the greatest over the past 500 years!

(3) Editor’s choice/random track

  1. “Cheap Sunglasses” by ZZ Top (playlist track N/A; track 09 on Deguello -1979) –this was not the next song in my playlist (Fernando by ABBA was), but I felt like making a random-holiday-trilogy today. If you have ever tried to get the same guitar sound while using the same equipment that guitarist Billy Gibbons did, but just couldn’t quite get the tone to match, it is because his Marshall Major amplifier had a blown tube in it at the time. This song has been sampled in a variety of rap songs and by Kid Rock in his “Cramp Ya Style” track.
  2. “Sunglasses At Night” by Corey Hart (track 01 on First Offense -1983) –Mr. Hart got the inspiration for this song at the studio. It seems the HVAC vents were directly above the mixing console and would blow air directly into the faces of the control room technicians, so they began wearing shades to protect their eyes from any airborne particles. The video was shot in the old Don Jail building in Toronto and East of the Don River.
  3. “The Future’s So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades” by Timbuk 3 (track 01 on Greetings From Timbuk 3 -1986) –the start of this song always reminds of that Huey Lewis and The News track, “Workin’ for a Livin’.” This song can be listened to from several perspectives. One would be as a light and airy, fun song to sing when you are feeling upbeat. However, you can also take it differently if you view the lyrics as sarcastic, in which case the need for future glasses takes on a different tone. Whatever the original intent, it was certainly a monster hit for this band when it was first released.

The term “Maundy” comes from the Latin word mandatum, which means “command.” The religious term comes from the Last Supper, believed to have taken place on a Thursday. According to the Bible, Jesus, who was at the height of his power and influence, washed his disciple’s feet in the ultimate display of no-ego humility. He then commanded them to do the same for one another. This is in line with what he was always preaching: the most important commandment was to love God, but the second-most important commandment (sort of a “1” and “1A” situation) was to love one another. It is also a wonderful guide for choosing leaders. When you have a choice, which one is most likely to show humility and compassion towards all?

Proverbs 11:1 – A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but a just weight is his delight.

Proverbs 23:23 – Buy truth, and do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding.

Ecclesiastes 5:10 – He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity.

Proverbs 6:16 – There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him:

17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,

18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil,

19 a false witness who pours out lies, and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.

Luke 16:14 – The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all these things, and they ridiculed him.

My Daily Prayer: Dear Lord, if it is within your will, please bless this home and all those who dwell in and around it, as well as the abodes and areas where my family and friends live, whom I think of daily. Indeed, even unto the whole world. Help all of them see your splendor and help bring peace on Earth. For yours is the glory and kingdom of heaven forever and ever. Amen!

Remember, Fear is the Mind-Killer, Don’t Panic, Keep Your Head Right with Ball, and May God be gracious to you, bless you, and make His face shine upon you.

* -In most cases, there is a little bad and good on both, and I feel that we, as a species, far too often close our minds. We take the quick and easy side that we find most to our liking and vilify everything else, when we should instead, be pushing our race and ourselves at every turn to a better understanding of all if we truly want to evolve into what we are capable of achieving. Can you imagine what kind of world it would be if we all just stopped looking out for number one, or choosing violence as an answer? Instead of looking out, we need to look in and make sure we like what we see, and then keep working to improve upon it, which will spread the positive. What if all the money and energy spent daily on war-related and hate-based things were focused on helping not just our fellow humans, but also our fellow Earth creatures? You want a paradise? Right there is the blueprint -every single person making the conscious effort to do better every moment of every day (“Fight the Good Fight” -Triumph). The question is, how bad do we want it and how far are we willing to go in order to get it? Bob Marley and Curtis Mayfield had it right. One Love/People Get Ready.

The main differences between forest and jungles are as follows (Woods are considered smaller versions of forests). Every jungle is a forest, but not every forest is a jungle.

Forest:

Tall trees and less dense vegetation

Easier to travel through for humans

Animals like deer and bears

Range of climates, including dry, tropical, and rain

Jungle:

Densely overgrown with vegetation

Difficult or impossible for humans to penetrate or travel through

Animals like large cats and reptiles

Usually found in tropical or humid climates

Random holiday picked: National Love A Tree Day is celebrated every May 16th in honor of the plant species that provides us with oxygen, shade, fruits, nuts, lumber, and shelter. They can also help folks living in concrete jungles (cities) feel a little more connected to nature and therfore a bit more positive. Along with the air, they also help filter water naturally and provide many of the same things for wildlife.

  1. “Neo-Tokyo” by Scandroid (playlist track 2031; track 11 on the self-tiled Scandroid debut album -2016) –this was a well-hyped (at least in the electronic music sphere) collaboration between Celldweller/Klayton (as “Red”) and Varien (as “Raven”). There were clues and a password to open a new website announcing it with snippets of some of the new material. The new music was slated to bring a more 1980s-infused synth-wave sound to their combined musical styles, and on that, it delivered. This remains my favorite track from the album, despite not being one that was originally featured.
  2. “Deep Forest” by Deep Forest (title/track 01 on the self-titled Deep Forest debut album -1992) –this energetic electronic instrumental conjures up images of South American tribes doing their thing in the rain forests where they live. Every civilization has their own rhythm to the daily lives of the inhabitants and any plants and animals they co-inhabit the area with. Some are more attuned to the natural world than others, and therefore sound a bit different than what you find in more urban areas.
  3. “Wilderness” by Bluetech (track 10 on Sines & Singularities -2020) –this electronic instrumental features a synth (synthesizer) sound known as pads. They are the almost keyboard sounding parts of the track. Modern DAWs often provide some basic pad effects and settings that you can fine tune to sound like almost anything. In this case, the artist does not seem to have altered them very much other than some extremely fine-tuning only noticeable at high volumes with how crisp everything is.

And back in 1941 on this date, Joe DiMaggio’s incredible 56-game hitting streak began!

Random holiday picked: National Straw Hat Day is celebrated every May 15th as a nod to this simple head attire that can be both fashionable and functional. My neighbor has recently started wearing one while he mows, and it kind of makes me want to get one, but wearing hats tends to make me feel warmer, which is why I’m more likely to be wearing a breathable mesh baseball cap when it’s warm and sunny out.

  1. “Wonderwall” by Oasis (playlist track 2023; track 03 on [(What’s The Story) Morning Glory? -1995] –this song no longer holds the UK charts record as the most popular song to never reach number one. The new figures from the Official Charts takes into account sales and streams, allowing this 1990s classic to be pushed aside by a song titled, “Mr. Brightside” by the band called The Killers. No response from the brothers Gallagher of Oasis on this recent news.
  2. “Straw Hat and Dirty Old Hank” by Barenaked Ladies (track 02 on Born On A Pirate Ship -1996) –this is a take on the true-life tale of a farmer who was obsessed and wound up stalking Anne Murray in the mid-1970s. The boys even managed to fit in some lyrics referencing two of Ms. Murray’s songs. In the second verse, you’ll hear, “I cried a tear, you wiped it dry, I put you up, up, on a pedestal so high,” which is based on her “You Needed Me” track, and “Spread my tiny wings and fly away” is based on the chorus from her hit titled, “Snowbird”.
  3. “Sharp Dressed Man” by ZZ Top (title/track 03 on Eliminator -1983) –this song popped into my head for this holiday because of this line: “Top coat, Top hat, And I don’t worry ‘cause my wallet’s fat,” which I like to sing as  “But I don’t wear them ‘cause my body’s fat.” Ugh, the truth hurts. (LoL) This song was revitalized in 2020 and actually made it back onto the Billboard charts after being featured in the band’s “ZZ Top: That Little Ol’ Band from Texas,” documentary.

The ol’ agree-to-disagree conclusion.

  1. “The Guitar Man” by Bread (playlist track 2018; title/track 02 on Guitar Man -1972) –well after hearing the band Cake cover this song, it pops into my head every time I hear the original. Mainly the space-y keyboard sound. Front man John McCrea actually sings a bit on that cover and doesn’t go with is usual dead-pan delivery. But I digress.. on this, the original version, the crowd noise you hear at the end was the result of a Jim Morrison introduction at a Doors concert.
  2. “Decency” by Balthazar (track 01 on Thin Walls -2015) –this languid track conjures up images of Spaghetti Westerns starring the younger Clint Eastwood in my mind. Not sure what the connection is there –maybe the snapping fingers? This album was the first time the band brought in an outside producer. Ben Hillier, known for his work with Depeche Mode and Blur, took on the challenge of getting the sound just right for this, the band’s third full album.
  3. “Be Kind” by Zak Abel (a single released in 2021) –this young artist was quite the youth table tennis player (see above). Despite suffering hearing loss due to otosclerosis that caused him to lose the ability to hear pitch, he refused to let that stop him. Instead, he re-learned the talent in a dedication to continue honing his music chops. His latest achievement was playing at King Charles’ Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle (replacing Freya Ridings who came down sick) on May 7, 2023.

Random holiday picked: International Nurse’s Day is celebrated every May 12th and celebrates all the contributions that nurses have made throughout time, and continue to make. It also commemorates the birthday (in 1820) of Florence Nightingale who was the founder of the profession during the Crimean War.

  1. “Lucky Ones” by Loverboy (playlist track 2010; track 06 on Get Lucky -1981) –there was a lot of conjecture and rumors regarding who was wearing the red leather pants used in the photo shoot for this album cover. As it turns out, it was the photographer’s daughter as she was the only available person at the time who could fit in them. Apparently, a rather large (6’-5”) male model’s hand was used to partially block the view since he was readily available and had the largest hands around. Unfortunately, the daughter (Tymara Kennedy) died in an automobile crash in 1993 with this as her only modeling credit.
  2. “Hospital Beds” by Florence + The Machine (track 23 on Lungs -2009) –Florence decided to do this cover of the Cold War Kids’ song after singing it live on stage with the band’s front man Nathan Willett. That was back in 2010 at Coachella. This stripped down version features minimal instrumentation and even some minimalistic refining of the original lyrics, definitely giving it a Florence + The Machine feel. This one delves into how being a patient can sometimes be overwhelming.
  3. “Pumpin Blood” by NoNoNo (track 03 on We Are Only What We Feel -2014) –this song was mostly chosen for the lyrics which feature medical terms I associate with nurses and doctors: “’Cause it’s your heart, it’s alive, it’s pumpin’ blood.” Also, most interactions with a nurse are an indication that a health issue has arisen, and you often need to have a driven, positive attitude in order to overcome the issue as quickly as possible. Finally, it’s a nice positive vibe to end the week on.

More “Northern Lights” are possible further south than usual over the weekend! I didn’t see it last night because of clouds and rain, but folks as far south as Florida were treated to an Aurora Borealis show last night due to some recent extreme solar activity. Our star has hurled several massive CMEs in our direction, causing much more intense interactions with our planet’s atmosphere than normal. Keep an eye out between 9 PM and midnight, maybe even until 2AM.

Ohio State’s Gold Pants legacy goes back to the early days of the football program when they struggled to beat TTUN (That Team Up North; a. k. a. Michigan). The two teams began playing each other in 1897, and by 1933, Ohio State had only managed 6 wins and 2 ties. Enter former TCU coach Francis Schmidt fresh from Texas. When asked how he was going to get the team prepared for the ‘superior’ Wolverines, he responded in his Texas drawl with, “They put their pants on one leg at a time, just like the rest of us.” A local businessman heard it and started the “Gold Pants Club.” Ever since, they commemorate victories over TTUN with golden lapel pins that look like football pants.

Random holiday picked: National Twilight Zone Day is celebrated every May 11th and celebrates both the TV show and those unexplained occurrences that have a mystical or strange feel about them. Three members of Star Trek (William Shatner (Captain Kirk) twice; Leonard Nimoy (Spock) once; George Takei (Sulu) once) appeared in the original series, as did the following well-known actors: Burt Reynolds, Carol Burnett, Cloris Leachman, Dick York, Johnathan Winters, Peter Falk, and Robert Duvall.

  1. “Fight the Good Fight” by Triumph (playlist track 2000; track 06 on Allied Forces -1981) –the lyricist (front man Rik Emmett) was inspired to write this by his aunt who was dying of cancer. “What can you tell someone who is facing the last challenge of this life?” he said. “Or – what will you tell yourself? If you’re in a rock band called Triumph, what message can you share with the people listening to a song on the radio, or standing on their chairs, out in an arena? Everyone gets to decide what their own ‘good’ fight will be, but everyone should be encouraged to discover it, and do it.”
  2. “Twilight Zone” by Golden Earring (track 06 on Cut -1982) –this song was written by guitarist George Kooymans after reading “The Bourne Identity.” Golden Earring is a Dutch band and this was their 16th album. The cover features the famous 1964 photo titled, “Cutting the Car Quickly” and shows the Jack of Diamonds just after a shot bullet shreds through the middle of it. The image was taken by M.I.T. professor “Doc” Edgerton and also features in the song’s video as a metaphor of the rogue spy’s life as portrayed in the video.
  3. “Cruising The Galaxy – Instrumental” by Rocket Empire (track 03 on See Me Speak In Color -2011) –this song was mostly chosen for the title since a number of Twilight Zone episodes involved space and some Star Trek regulars appeared in the original. I first heard this Portland, Oregon-based duo on the Sirius XM “Chill” channel. It may have even been this song. It was either this or “Simmer Down Jammie.”

To the folks at Evercare who created the Mega (Lint) Roller as an alternative to daily vacuuming. They don’t pick up the heavier stuff that a vacuum gets, but they are pretty amazing for pet owners who try to keep their carpets from getting that hairy feeling. Plus, they don’t scare your pets and spread dust around like a vacuum does when the filter’s a bit too full.

Random holiday picked: National Clean Up You Room Day is celebrated every May 10th and encourages folks to declutter one of the most important areas in the house for good stress management. 1. “Sea of Love” by the Honeydippers (playlist track 1987; track 02 on The Honeydrippers: Volume One -1984) –this band was formed by former Led Zeppelin front man Robert Plant after the band called it quits following the unexpected death of their drummer (John Bonham) in 1980. As it turned out, this EP was the only album they ever released. Contributing musicians included Mr. Plant’s former bandmate (and Yardbirds member) Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck (also a former Yardbirds member), and Paul Schaffer (Late Night with David Letterman Band).
  2. “The Shelf In The Room” by Days of the New (track 01 on the self-titled Days of the New debut album -1997) –in a sense, this song is about the resiliency of youth. The story in the video follows a young boy who seems to be left to his own devices without much luck, and no one to help. However, he finds discarded objects that he likes, and stores them on a shelf in an abandoned building he lives in out in the woods. The shelf becomes the boy’s place of grounding.
  3. “White Room” by Cream (track 01 on Wheels of Fire -1968) –the lyrics for this song were written by poet Pete Brown, while the music was written by the band’s bassist, Jack Bruce. The band’s producer, Felix Pappalardi actually plays the violas on this track. Eric Clapton has played this song live with the likes of Phil Collins (Live Aid, 1985), Sheryl Crow (Sheryl Crow and Friends: Live from Central Park, 2005), and with his old bandmates at Royal Albert Hall in London, 2005.

Random Note(s): the first known socks were made from matted animal fur. Ancient Romans improved on the design by using skins as well and tying their socks to their ankles. The Middle Ages brought about the use of brightly colored and customized socks as a fashion statement. The base word was “socc,” but they were referred to as stockings until relatively recently.

  1. “I’m Like A Bird” by Nelly Furtado (playlist track 1968; track 05 on Whoa, Nelly! -2000) –lyrically, this is basically a late-Gen X version of “Freebird” by Lynyrd Skynyrd, but this time it’s the woman walking away. The tempo of this song is 90 bpm (beats per minute), which is where you typically find most hip-hop songs, so that, and Nelly’s unique voice are two of the reasons that this does not sound like an average pop or rock song.
  2. “Knee Socks” by Arctic Monkeys (track 11 on AM -2013) –this track starts by sounding like another lamentation of love gone wrong and pining after specific memories of the relationship. However, if you listen closely, it actually seems to be a story of something that began as a fling where both parties were just trying to get over their blues, into perhaps something more. The “Mean Streets” mentioned is a reference to the 1973 film, not the Van Halen song.
  3. “A Fool For Your Stockings” by ZZ Top (track 04 on Degüello -1995) –this was one of a trio of hits from the band’s sixth studio album. Billy Gibbons once stated that this was the first album where they felt they could cut loose and try some new things, like synthesizers. Some of the other hits from this one include “Cheap Sunglasses” (their first use of synthesizers) and “I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide.”

Random Note(s): I titled the photo “One Of Us Moved” because it seemed like I had it setup for a good framing. It was probably me that moved. My sister and I go on occasional treks for our birthdays and some holidays. It kind of harkens back to when we were kids and our mom would surprise us with a ‘day of gallivanting’ where we would go grab a bite to eat and then enjoy it at a park, maybe take in a movie, or just drive around and make a few stops here and there. It was always unplanned and always a good time. Also, the sun is in a mood. Check out all the details at spaceweather.com.

One Of Us Moved (outside Stan Hywet Manor; 14-MAY’21 – 12:50pm)

Random holiday picked: National Teacher Appreciation Day is celebrated every Tuesday of the first full week in May. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt persuaded the 81st U.S. Congress to proclaim a National Teacher’s Day in 1953. It would become official 27 years later, on March 7, 1989. The day was eventually moved to May and is now the entire first week of May is declared Teacher Appreciation Week.

(3) Editor’s choice/random track

  1. “Me and You and a Dog Named Boo” by Lobo (playlist track 1959; track 02 on Introducing Lobo -1971) –This song is one of those tracks that is stuck in the recesses of my mind. It never really gets stuck in my head as an ear-worm -and I rarely find myself repeating the lyrics, but it does deliver a feeling of familiarity and childhood memories every time I hear it. Country musician Stonewall Jackson did a cover of this later in the same year of Lobo’s release, and it was his last American Top 40 Country hit. There was also an animated spinoff of The Brady Bunch called “The Brady Kids” that did a cover of it the following year.
  2. “The Teacher” by Foo Fighters (track 09 on But Here We Are -2023) –This transforms into a moody, melancholic song around the midpoint for short spell. Front man Dave Grohl wrote it after dealing with the losses his mother (Virginia Grohl, who was a teacher for most of her life) and long-time drummer Taylor Hawkins after their recent deaths. In the lyrics, he is calling out to things beyond this realm, hoping for guidance, before realizing that making every moment count and to go on living is the highest form of honoring them he can do.
  3. “Teacher, Teacher” by 38 Special (track 11 on Flashback -1987) –this is another one of those songs from the 1980s that I kind of forgot about. It was not super popular, but most of the folks I knew were familiar with it, so it also was not one of those ‘deep’ album tracks (as in buried somewhere in the middle as far as the number of tracks). Lyrically, it explores the bond between a student and their teacher or mentor. It accurately describes the nervousness of heading out into the world after completing a form of education and/or training.

Random Note(s): in the Star Wars movies, Chewbacca’s voice was made by editing and combining the voices of lions, bears, walruses, badgers, and other assorted animals. The fact that some folks can mimic it is pretty darn impressive. The TIE fighter sound is an edited mix of an elephant bellow and a car on wet pavement. Finally, the Ewok language is actually a combination of Nepalese and Tibetan.

Random holiday picked: World Laughter Day is celebrated every first Sunday in May and aims to remind us of the importance of laughing for our own well-being. Laughter will increase your oxygen intake, release endorphins in your brain, and stimulate your heart and lungs. It will also make your sides hurt if you do it uncontrollably –so pace yourself! A doctor (Dr. Madan Kataria) who felt it would be good therapy for some of his patients founded this holiday in 1998.

(2) Today’s holiday-themed track

(3) Editor’s choice/random track

  1. “Cup of Coffee” by Garbage (playlist track 1951; track 05 on Beautiful Garbage -2001) –this song captures a moment that becomes a strong memory due to the emotional impact that it has on the narrator. It also showcases how simple, everyday actions -or even certain foods and drinks, can spark a painful memory of lost love, and how numbing it can become when something in your daily routine brings back the pain in a seemingly endless cycle.
  2. “Laughter in the Rain” by Neil Sedaka (title/track 04 on Laughter in the Rain-1974) –this is one of those songs I remember from my early childhood. Mom was a big fan of Kasey Kasem’s weekly American Top 40 countdown show, so we often heard popular songs from that era. We would also hear it on car rides with the cousins as we tooled around town. The somewhat funny background about how the lyrics finally got penned actually involves a clear blue sky with nary a cloud!
  3. “One Week” by Barenaked Ladies (track 01 on Stunt -1998) –this humorous track from a band with a funny name almost always makes me smile when I hear it. This song coincidently spent ‘one week’ in the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100 shortly after its release. Some of the more interesting pop culture references you hear in it include Aquaman, LeAnn Rimes, The X-Files, Sting, Snickers, Sailor Moon, and the Canadian restaurant chain Swiss Chalet.
