Singles Awareness Day

and..

Susan B. Anthony’s Birthday / National (U.S.) Gumdrop Day (every 15th of February)

Today’s random factoid(s):

  • Singles Awareness Day occurs the day after Valentine’s Day on purpose. It is a way of expressing care for those who do not get to revel in a holiday specifically catered towards couples and other similar relationships. Valentine’s Day can often be a melancholy affair for singles, and this day is aimed at bringing them good tidings and cheer. Let’s not forget that single folks are more likely to volunteer in civic organizations and help subsidize the tax breaks that married folks get.
  • Susan B. Anthony’s birthday continues to be celebrated as a testament to this remarkable woman’s courage. She was raised by a Quaker family with a strong sense of moral obligations that often engaged in activist traditions. By the time she was 17, she was collecting anti-slavery petitions because of her sense of justice and moral convictions. I watched a show about Greta Thornburg last night, and can’t help but see the similarities here. Many have chosen to mock her, just like those who did the same to Ms. Anthony, but in the end, who does history remember?
  • National Gumdrop Day celebrates the humble edible candy that continue to be made today and now have an offshoot that we call gummies. Gumdrops have likely been around since the late 17th or early 18th Century, but would’ve been a bit more similar to gummies as far as the texture goes, and perhaps even more like barely solidified jelly. Their earliest written mention is by a candy shop in Decatur, Illinois back in 1859. The more chewy, modern gumdrop is believed to have origins right here in Ohio (The Heart Of It All) thanks to candy manufacturer Percy Truesdell.

Inside Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens in Akron, Ohio (14-MAY’21 @ 11:27 AM)

–One of several foyers inside Stan Hywet.

TODAY’S THEMED TRACKS TRILOGY:

“Alone Again” by Dokken (track 09 on Tooth and Nail -1984) –this song was actually written back in the mid-70s by a young Don Dokken. He had forgotten about it and only rediscovered it after rummaging through some old stuff while searching for material for a ballad that the record company wanted,

“Blood Red Skies” by Judas Priest (track 06 on Ram It Down -1988) –this song is all about not giving in –just like some remarkable women who have changed the world! The lyrics for the bridge say it all, “As the end is drawing near, Standing proud, I won’t give in to fear, As I die a legend will be born, I will stand, I will fight, You’ll never take me alive!”

“Candy Store Rock” by Led Zeppelin (track 05 on Presence -1976) –this song was inspired by the 1950s rock songs that the band members listened to growing up. They did not spend a lot of time on it as Mr. Plant actually sang it from a wheelchair while still recovering from a rather serious car accident from the previous fall that ended up canceling part of the band’s tour that year.

TODAY’S BONUS TRACKS TRILOGY:

“Solitude” by M83 (track 07 on Junk -2016) –I really like the piano in this modern slow-burner, and the keyboard that kicks in is fire!

-and-

“Gimme Back My Bullets” by Lynyrd Skynyrd (title/track 01 on Gimme Back My Bullets -1976) –this song is about finding renewed tenacity after being down for a bit.

 –and-

“The Candy Man” by Sammy Davis, Jr. (track 05 on That Old Black Magic -1995) –this song wound up as Mr. Davis’ only number one hit.

Library Lover’s Day

and..

National (U.S.) Organ Donor / Ferris Wheel Day (every 14th of February)

Today’s random factoid(s):

  • Library Lover’s Day is for all the librarians and book lovers out there, and falls right smack dab in the middle of National Library Lover’s Month. Benjamin Franklin was all about the library. He started a lending one in 1731 called the Library Company. The town in Massachusetts bearing his name was home to a library old enough to have once had books donated by the man himself!
  • National Organ Donor Day celebrates those who have decided to allow their organs to be used to give life to or extend the lives of others after their own passing. It can be seen as a very heroic, selfless thing to do. This holiday started out as a joint venture between the Saturn (automobile) Corporation and the United Auto Workers.
  • National Ferris Wheel Day celebrates that county/state fair and amusement park staple –the Ferris wheel. Invented by its namesake, George W.G. Ferris, Jr. for the World’s Fair in Chicago (1893), he was actually just trying to show his engineering skills and may have gotten the idea from a similar structure built in 1854 at the New York State Fair by a couple of Erie Canal workers.

Outside Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens in Akron, Ohio (14-MAY’21 @ 11:19 AM)

–No more deleted photos for now. Onward with some recent (past few years) outings. My sister and I visited this place as part of her birthday celebration that year. It was one of her favorites, and I had never been.

TODAY’S THEMED TRACKS TRILOGY:

“Library Magic” by The Head And The Heart (track 06 on Signs of Light -2016) –this song equates the up and downs in life to a good book. One chapter may have the main character enjoying life while the next one has them hanging upside down.

“Just Like That” by Bonnie Raitt (title/track 04 on Just Like That -2022) –this song won the GRAMMY for Song of the Year (Recording Academy) last year and was inspired by true events. It involved the mother of an organ donor who had passed meeting the person thankful to be alive because of the donated heart. There’s a bit more to it than that, but I can’t do it justice in this short of space. Definitely worth the search.

Ferris Wheel” by Imagine Dragons (track 11 on Mercury – Acts 1 & 2 -2022) –This song is a promise to the narrator’s love interest that life will be like the joy of riding a Ferris wheel if they give the relationship a chance. It sounds like a story of two people who went through some tough times together, but did not wind up together.

TODAY’S BONUS TRACKS TRILOGY:

“The Book of Boba Fett” by Ludwig Göransson (title/track 17 on The Book of Boba Fett: Vol.1 (Chapters 1-4) [Original Soundtrack] -2022) –If you saw this TV series, than you will recognize this track.

-and-

“My Last Breath” by Evanescance (track 10 on  Fallen -2003) –one of the first songs that came to mind with the subject of organ donation, right after Bonnie Raitt’s above-mentioned track.

 –and-

“Take Me To The Top” by Loverboy (Electric Light Orchestra) (track 09 on Discovery -1979) –this song embodies where I want the Ferris wheel to take me. There’s nothing quite like a bird’s eye view of the world!

World Radio Day

and..

National (U.S.) Cheddar / Get A Different Name Day (every 13th of February)

Today’s random factoid(s):

  • World Radio Day commemorates the anniversary of United Nations Radio, which was created in 1946. This was 8 years after the Orson Welles’ broadcast of H.G. Wells’, “The War of the Worlds” radio show that was so believable (especially to those who missed the opening disclaimer that it was a story), it actually caused a panic in the U.S. It was already a time of anxiety as the seeds of WWI were being sown and we were just coming out of the Great Depression. The U.N. Radio was created as a way for interested folks to keep tabs on what was going on within the walls of the United Nations.
  • National Cheddar Day was created in 2019 by an Oregon-based cooperative owned by like-minded farmers known as Tillamook. Tillamook is the name of the Native American tribe that resides along the Oregon coast and comes from the Chinook language where it means, “people of the village Nekelim/Nehalem” and is often interpreted as “the land of many waters”. Cheddar cheese has a legend-based origin involving a milkmaid from approximately 800 years ago who left a pail of milk somewhere in Cheddar Gorge caves while she took care of some other things. Upon her return, she found the milk had turned into what we now call cheddar cheese.
  • Get A Different Name Day is a fun-based holiday designed for those who may not be overly happy with their parents’ naming choices. Here in the U.S., there are legal channels you can pursue to do an official name change, but it is going to take longer than one day to complete in most cases. Some folks were so bold as to give their children the same first and last name (John John, Sally Sally, etc.). There are currently nearly 5,000 known instances of this in the U.S. alone.

* – time to lighten the load of stuff that I’ve made a part of my life, including pointless and/or low quality digital images; giving them a final digital resting place here before deletion everywhere else.

TODAY’S THEMED TRACKS TRILOGY:

“War of the Worlds” by The Session (track 02 on The Greatest Instrumentals of All Time -2008) –this song is part of an album that includes modern-style instrumental covers of tracks with connections to movies and other forms of entertainment. I’m not a big fan of the Exorcist movie (or any horror film for that matter), but I do like that piano riff in the theme music, and this album also features a pretty cool cover of that titled, “Tubular Bells (Exorcist Theme)”.

“Cheddar” by Petie (a single released in -2023) –this song reminds someone that the narrator knows that they are no better than anyone else, despite how they may act. It questions the morality and motives of doing things just to get likes, which is often a sign of feeling inadequate in your own shoes. The artist is a Dublin-born, Seattle-raised, L.A.-based musician, so she has seen things and has a good idea of what she talks about.

“Change” by Kodi Lee (a single released earlier this year-2024) –This is a song from the artist who became a bit of a sensation during season 14 of the television talent show “America’s Got Talent.” As a legally blind person diagnosed with autism, he is widely considered a musical savant. These are folks with a disability with the side effect of having profound abilities or talents, usually in some mathematical capacity, including music creation.

TODAY’S BONUS TRACKS TRILOGY:

“Landing Party” by Solar Fields (track 07 on Random Friday  -2012) –Any type of a landing party on foreign soil would certainly get the radio airwaves excited.

-and now, for something completely different –

“Stuck With You” by Huey Lewis & The News (track 02 on Fore! -1986) –all apologies for the incoming pun, but this is a ‘cheesy’ 80s love song -and I bet the milkmaid that ‘discovered’ cheddar cheese had a similar thought to this song’s title when she first saw it and brought it back to her residence.

 –and-

“New Girl Now” by Honeymoon Suite (track 01 on the self-titled Honeymoon Suite debut album -1984) –this song states that the protagonist has a new girl now, and she’s just like ‘you’ (referring to his old girlfriend). I mean, who’s to say she wasn’t the same girl just partaking in Get A Different Name Day and this song is all tongue-in-cheek?  >;}

Darwin Day, Lincoln’s Birthday

and..

National (U.S.) Plum Pudding Day (every 12th of February)

Today’s random factoid(s):

  • Darwln Day celebrates the birthdate of naturalist and geologist Charles Darwin in 1809. It also aims to generate more interest in general science, because the better you understand something, the better your interactions with it will be. His most famous work is the science-based book titled, “The Origin of Species” and provides the main counter-argument to faith-based creation. I, for one, lean more on faith, but also suffer from a very analytical mind that is open to respectful inquiry.
  • Lincoln’s Birthday commemorates the birth of one of our greatest humanitarian presidents. Known for being the president that served during the Civil War and helped mend a broken nation after it ended. He produced the Emancipation Proclamation (Proclamation 95) that deemed African-Americans as free and no longer slaves (what a ridiculous notion ‘slavery’ is to begin with -it always breeds contempt that grows into the freedom of those enslaved). He also famously wrote the Gettysburg Address that starts with the phrase, “Four score and seven years ago.” That equates to 87 years as a score was considered 20 years.
  • Plum Pudding is a traditional dish that became a Christmas-time tradition and would have still been quite popular while both of the above-mentioned folks were alive. The use of dried fruits was used for sweetness versus more modern convenient ingredients like sugar and honey. Figgy pudding is a very close relative of this dessert. This dish’s name is also a misnomer as it is more of a cake than pudding (the British used ‘pudding’ for nearly any sweet dessert dish back in the day), and rarely includes any plums in modern versions.

TODAY’S THEMED TRACKS TRILOGY:

“Truganini” by Midnight Oil (track 05 on Earth And Sun And Moon -1993) –this song is actually about a drought that occurred in Australia and mentions the Roma Bar which was a popular destination just outside the city of Darwin. It expresses some concerns of the Aboriginal natives and is titled after one of their most popular figures. Darwin is the capital of the Northern Territory in The Land Down Under.

“Empire” by Queensrÿche (title/track 06 on Empire -1990) –one of the lines in this song mentions how a form a slavery still exists where certain people are pitted against one another for the profit of another. In many ways, it could also represent corporations that would rather make a profit at the expense of their workers than do what is right as a modern form of slavery. In Frank Herbert’s Dune novels, slavery comes back after the Butlerian Jihad destroys all thinking machines and anything that can be used to make one. That form of slavery is economy-based versus race-based.

“Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2)” by Pink Floyd (track 05/disc 01 on The Wall -1979) –Most folks my age are familiar with the background refrain towards the end of this track that goes, “If you don’t eat your meat, you can’t have any pudding. How can you have any pudding if you don’t eat your meat?” It is said in an obvious sardonic tone as if berating someone for not wanting to eat the main course of whatever meal time it is.

TODAY’S BONUS TRACKS TRILOGY:

“Tojo (Never Made It To Darwin)” by the Hoodoo Gurus (track 11 on Electric Soup -1992) –this band likes to write tongue-in-cheek lyrics, and this one laments the fact that WWII Japanese General Hideki Tojo never made it Darwin, Australia.

-and now, for something completely different –

“The Gettysburg Address” by I Memorized That (a single released in 2021) –this is a neat recital of the famous speech. The single EP also includes an instrumental version that stands on its own merits. Johnny Cash did a version on his 1972 album America: A 200-Year Salute In Story & Song.

 –and-

“Pudding & Pie” by The New Mastersounds (track 04 on Renewable Enegy -2018) –I liked this song as soon as I heard the first few notes and deemed it a cool little instrumental to end today’s trilogy on.

What if all the money and energy spent daily on war-related and hate-based things was focused on helping not just our fellow humans, but our fellow Earth creatures? You want a paradise? Right there is the blueprint -if every single person made the concious effort to do better every moment of every day (“Fight the Good Fight” -Triumph). The question is, how bad do we want it and how far are we willing to go in order to get it? Bob Marley and Curtis Mayfield had it right. One Love/People Get Ready.

Random Data Dump for February 11th, 2024

Today is Sunday, February 11, 2024 and..

Although, Sundays have recently been rest days for this blog, I did have time for almost a normal post today to make up for the recent inconsistencies (tech issues, old cat issues, appliances issues, old me issues, etc.) so..

T-minus 3 days until Valentine’s Day \ 317 days until Christmas \ 324 days until 2025

World Day of the Sick

and..

National (U.S.) Make a Friend / White Shirt Day (every 11th of February)

Today’s random factoid(s):

  • World Day of the Sick was initiated May 13, 1992 by Pope John Paul II. He had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease the previous year. He chose today’s date to coincide with the memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes as many unusual healings have been recorded at the Marian Sanctuary in Lourdes, France.
  • National Make a Friend Day encourages folks to reach out beyond their immediate circle of friends and add a new one to the list. You could contact a friend of a friend or a complete stranger, maybe even that coworker that you say, “Hi,” to in passing, but never chat up.
  • National White Shirt Day commemorates the Flint, Michigan sit-down strike and honors those who have worked in the automotive industry. The strike came about on November 12, 1936, after hundreds of deaths that year alone believed to have been caused by brutal working conditions and an unusual heat wave. The strike was resolved on this date the following year.

–can’t really recall what I created this series of futuristic vehicles with an 80s neon theme for.

TODAY’S THEMED TRACKS TRILOGY:

“Weight of Sound” by Stick Figure, TJ O’Neill (track 06 on Burial Ground -2012) –this song is dedicated to the narrator’s girlfriend who has been sick for the past 24 hours. It also talks about how music can help provide healing, and uses the metaphor of sound having a certain kind of weight to it.

“My Best Friend’s Girl” by The Cars (track 02 on the self-titled The Cars debut album -1978) –It’s not an idea way to expand your circle of friends, but your best friend’s girl (who used to be yours) is likely to do it since it would probably be awkward to hang out with them afterward. That would make it a fine time to expand the ol’ horizons.

“Foreclosure Of A Dream” by Megadeth (track 04 on Countdown To Extinction -1992) –This song touches on a variety of ways that hard-working Americans have seen their ‘American Dream’ foreclosed upon, including the heavily automotive-dependent Midwest, “The heartland cries, loss of all pride, To leave ain’t beleivin’, so try and be tried.”

NO BONUS TRACKS TODAY (I did not have enough time to put a trilogy together) –on the plus side, the appliances issues turned out to be a couple of tripped fuses. I wonder if the recent intense solar storms had any connection.

The Chinese/Lunar New Year and World Pulses (edible seeds) Day

and..

National (U.S.) Umbrella Day (every 10th of February)

Today’s random factoid(s):

  • According to the Chinese New Year, this is the Year of the Wood Dragon. Dragons (a. k. a. Loongs) are the fifth animal in the Chinese/Lunar 12-year cycle of their Zodiac signs. The Rabbit was last year, and the Snake will be next year. The previous dragon was the Water Dragon in 2012 (Metal was before that in 2000), and the next dragon is the Fire Dragon in 2036 (Earth follows; previous Earth Dragon was 1988).
  • We currently have 11 different types of pulses, according to the U.N. FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization. They include Bambara beans, chickpeas, cowpeas, dry beans, dry broad beans, dry peas, lentils, lupins, pigeon peas, vetches, and uncategorized minor pulses. The name “pulse” is a derivative of the Latin “puls,” meaning thick gruel (similar to porridge, but more watery).
  • The first umbrellas were designed to protect against the sun, not precipitation. The ancient Egyptians used a mix of lotus leaves and feathers (depending on what was easily available) attached to a stick for helping to keep royalty cool in their hot, desert environment. The Dark Ages following the fall of the Roman Empire was also a dark time for umbrellas as their usage by royalty and working classes alike is hardly mentioned in historical archives from the time.

Space Cat Chilling on the Cosmos coffee table book –(29-AUG’22 @ 3:22 PM)

TODAY’S THEMED TRACKS TRILOGY:

“Monkey On Your Back” by Aldo Nova (track 04 on Subject…Aldo Nova -1983) –this is one of my favorite songs by this Canadian artist. It is kind of a toss-up between this one and “Fantasy” as to which one I like the most. This track preaches against the dangers of drug use and other addictions. It was chosen for today’s themed tracks for the following lyrics: “He found a dragon that bites.”

“Astronomy Domine” by Pink Floyd (track 02 on the live Pulse album -1995) –originally written by Syd Barrett for their debut album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967), we’re going with the live version from the Pulse album recorded in 1994 during the band’s European leg of their Division Bell tour. By this time, Syd had long been away from the band, having been replaced by now-legendary guitarist David Gilmour, and the album this tour was supporting would be the final one with songwriter/singer/bassist/ founding member Roger Waters.

“Pink Umbrella” by Digital Project feat. L.O.B. (track 01 on Rain -2011) –This is a pretty neat electronic instrumental. It doesn’t do anything too crazy, just kind of marches along with a quiet resolution and little bits of ear candy spread throughout. It is one of those songs that make excellent background music while you work or play.

TODAY’S BONUS TRACKS TRILOGY:

“The Song of the Golden Dragon” by Estas Tonne (track 07 on “Strings and Stories of a Troubadour”, Live in Odeon, Vienna -2011) –This is an amazing work of acoustic guitar art with flairs of Spanish style playing intermixed with a wide variety of other influences. A truly wonderful performance.

-and now, for something completely different –

“Harvest Home Medley – Peas, Beans, Oats and the Barley/The Mistress’s Health/Poor Tom” by Shirley & Dolly Collins (track 10 on  For As Many As Will -1978) –this song has been handed down in rural areas for many generations. It started out as a nursery rhyme to teach children the importance of farming.

 –and-

“Red Umbrella” by astrid (title/track 06 on Red Umbrella -2005) –this song features that old-timey effect on the vocals for most of the opening section before allowing you to enjoy the wonderful vocals of this artist and a nice modern beat and sound to go with it.

National (U.S.) Pizza / Toothache / Read In The Bathtub Day (every 09th of February)

Today’s random factoid(s):

  • Who else but the ancient Romans would be the creators of the first pizza? They placed layers of sauce, cheese, and herbs on a placenta bread, which was derived from the placenta cake (multi-layered dough with cheese, honey, and bay leaves) popular in both ancient Greece and ancient Rome. Pizza as we know it today came about in the 18th Century via Naples, Italy. I recently watched a Pro Walking Tour of this city, and it was pretty entertaining. I have watched several of these PWT videos for different locations around the world, and Italians are definitely the most chatty and willing to interact with the cameraman.
  • Toothache Day is reminder to keep up with your dental care routine and checkups. For many of us, this involves toothpaste, which is believed to have been invented by the ancient Egyptian approximately 9,000 years ago. Their recipe was a mixture of oxen hooves, myrrh, eggshells, pumice, and water –so, not exactly minty like we’ve become accustomed to, thanks to Colgate in 1873.
  • One of the most famous proponents of reading in the tub is Stephen King. It’s another holiday that seems to have roots in ancient Rome and Greece. A bathtub discovered in the ruins of the palace of Knossos on Crete is thought to be one of the oldest known, and most historians can tell you about the public bath built by the Roman Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa in 27 B.C.

Deleted Photo* Number 27 (“out with the old” is my personal theme for 2024) –(06-AUG’17 @ 1:04 PM)

–deleting this one because I prefer the close-ups that I got of the flowers and don’t really see any use for this one.

* – time to lighten the load of stuff that I’ve made a part of my life, including pointless and/or low quality digital images; giving them a final digital resting place here before deletion everywhere else.

TODAY’S THEMED TRACKS TRILOGY:

“Spanish Steps (of Rome)” by Toto (track 14 on Mindfields -1999) –this song mentions some of the most iconic places to visit in Rome, including the Trevi fountain, the statues of Romulus and Remus being nursed by the Wolf Mother, and the catacombs. Two lovers who had met and fell in love earlier at the steps search for each other later all over the city.

“Toothache” by Westislonely (a single released in 2023) –this song laments a relationship that has soured as neither person seems all that interested in finding ways to rekindle the old magic and likens heartache to a toothache. It is an interesting song in that it has elements of a power ballad to go with a distinct indie sound and arrangement.

“Bathwater” by No Doubt (track 03 on Return of Saturn -2000) –this song is all about romanticizing your current relationship because of a simple act that the protagonist enjoys. Lyrically, it has that same vibe that Joan Jett’s “I Hate Myself For Loving You,” does. Of course, it has that old familiar No Doubt ska sound to it.

TODAY’S BONUS TRACKS TRILOGY:

“Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land” by MARINA (title/track 01 on Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land  -2021) –The opening drumbeat reminded me of the previously-mentioned Joan Jett song, just sped up, and the title fits in with today’s theme.

-and now, for something completely different –

“Ancient Stones” by Jeremy Soule (track 05 on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim: Original Game Soundtrack -2013) –if you have spent any decent amount of time playing Skyrim, this song will sound quite familiar.

 –and-

“Ancient Walls of Flowers” by Marcy Playground (track 04 on the self-titled Marcy Playground debut album -1997) –this song contemplates missed connections due to one of the parties not being ‘present’ (their mind is elsewhere). Folks my age would know this band for their hit from this album titled, “Sex & Candy”.

National (U.S.) Lame Duck / Frozen Yogurt / Chopsticks Day (every 06th of February)

Today’s random factoid(s):

  • National Lame Duck day is aimed at the lame duck sessions of the U.S. Congress. It used to be most of the first quarter of the new year, stretching on until March 04th, but now ends in January, thanks to the 20th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. This is the session that presides over the changing of one term to the next one, and for this reason, rarely gets any meaningful work done, as some of the current members will soon be replaced.
  • Frozen yogurt started out as “Frogurt” as sold by H.P. Hood in the 1970s. He is the first person recorded to have come up with a repeatable recipe for making frozen yogurt, and was soon followed by TCBY who really took the product to a new level with all the different flavors they came up with.
  • Chopsticks are believed to have been invented sometime around 1,200 B.C., which would place them after forks (~2,400 B.C.) and before spoons (~1,000 B.C.). Here are some chopstick etiquette tips for you:
    • Crossing them on a bowl, plate, or table is considered impolite and potentially unlucky.
    • Placing them side-by-side next to a dish or bowl is considered proper.
    • They should not be used to pass food to another pair of chopsticks or to stab at food.
    • They also follow the double-dip rule for chips, as in don’t (it increases the chance of spreading germs) –this includes using the same ones you eat with to grab food from a community bowl or waving them over food that is not yours alone.

TODAY’S THEMED TRACKS TRILOGY:

“Mother” by Pink Floyd (track 06/disc 01 on The Wall -1979) –this song features a protagonist who is trying to reconcile losing his father at an early age to World War II, and then growing up with an overbearing mother who was doing the best she could. One of the lyrics asks, “Should I run for President?”

“Frozen Yogurt” by Ivory Beaches (track 12 on [Ed. Note: this album title is in Japanese and I was unable to properly translate it] -2024) –this is a cool little chill-out track that sounds like it would actually be a good listen while enjoying some frozen yogurt. The main artist is listed as Ivory Beaches and the composer is listed as Kido Yamamoto.

“Chopsticks” by Jeff Lorber (track 04 on Kickin’ It -2001) –Man, seems like it’s been a minute since I stumbled upon a really good smooth jazz track that I couldn’t recall hearing before. Oh happy day! This one just absolutely oozes “classic smooth jazz” throughout.

TODAY’S BONUS TRACKS TRILOGY:

“Politician” by Cream (track 06 on Wheels Of Fire  -1968) –this tracks takes a critical look at the way most politicians operate, telling you anything you want to hear in order to get your vote, and most likely never intending to truly do anything.

-and now, for something completely different –

“Frozen Desert” by Iseo & Dodosound (track 02 on Cat Platoon -2015) –as a human with cats, I find myself intrigued by this album title –if this song is any indication, it could be a good one.

 –and-

“Utensils” by Resonant Field (track 09 on Resonant Shift -2024) –the mix for this song could use a little work, like maybe turning down the metronome and making things even out a little more with a bit more brightness, but all-in-all, not a bad little tune. It will be interesting to see if there are any follow-up releases with improved mixing.

National (U.S.) Chocolate Fondue / Weatherperson’s Day (every 05th of February)

Today’s random factoid(s):

  1. Nutella is a cocoa/hazelnut spread with sweeteners that was created by Ferrero, an Italian confectionary company. The first version was a result of inflated chocolate prices throughout Europe during Napoleon’s attempted blockade of chocolate-loving Britain. This led to the idea of using readily-available chopped up hazelnuts in the chocolate to increase the coverage.
  2. War was once again responsible for the next version, as chocolate prices once again inflated during WWII. Once again, the humble hazelnut was turned to, this time by Alba, Piedmont bakery owner Pietro Ferrero. It started out as a solid block known as Pasta Gianduja. In 1951, he refined a creamy version originally sold as Supercrema, before it was marketed under the more Euro-friendly Nutella brand name.
  3. There was actually a bit of a beef between Mr. Ferrero and those who created this holiday and the NutellaDay.com website. However, after thinking about it, Mr. Ferrero decided to drop his cease-and-desist demands and reached out to the holiday inventors instead. Thus, a product forged by war ended up stopping a feud!

Deleted Photo* Number 25 (“out with the old” is my personal theme for 2024) –(21-AUG’17 @ 2:34 PM)

–I believe this is one of those “accidental” shots where picking the supposed smartphone up somehow triggers the camera instead. Apparently, I was outside and the sun was almost directly overhead.

* – time to lighten the load of stuff that I’ve made a part of my life, including pointless and/or low quality digital images; giving them a final digital resting place here before deletion everywhere else.

TODAY’S THEMED TRACKS TRILOGY:

“hazelnut” by S N U G (track 07 on Layover -2021) –this song is from a young lo-fi chill-hop artist with 14 years of classical piano training and experience. As indicated by the musical genre he mainly resides in, it’s a slow-burner –and a good one at that.

“Hippos Love Chocolate” by JiMiG2pt0 (a single released in -2017) –yep, I’m going with a shameless plug here. I created this track with FL Studios back in 2016/2017 (it usually takes me several months to completely flesh out a song). This one was inspired by one of the “Librarians” movies and really just made for fun and experimentation.

“Ferrero” by Chai Kat (track 02 on Hail Satin -2019) –I am not real familiar with this band, but they appear to enjoy using double-entendres and other plays on words. The song kind of sounds a wee-bit like what you might get if The Edge from U2 got together with The Cure. That would certainly be an interesting get-together.

TODAY’S BONUS TRACKS TRILOGY:

“Inflation Blues” by B.B. King (track 01 on Blues ‘N’ Jazz  -1983) –Mmm. This song not only fits today’s theme, but the way most of the country is feeling about inflation these days.

-and now, for something completely different –

“Gianduja” by Relaxing Piano Crew (track 16 on Jazz Time Cocoa -2017) –if you like chill-out music, this is about as chill-out as it gets.

 –and-

“Cocoa de Rock” by Stick Figure (track 13 on World on Fire -2019) –I’ve come to enjoy a number of songs from this reggae band. One of my favorites from them is “Weight of Sound”.

Instead of looking out, we need to look in and make sure we like what we see, then keep working to improve upon it, which will spread the positive. Stuffed Mushroom Day

and..

National (U.S.) Thank A Mail Carrier / Homemade Soup Day (every 04th of February)

Today’s random factoid(s):

  1. Sunday is now a rest day for this blog, but here are a few interesting tidbits about mushrooms:
  2. Mushrooms have been around longer than trees, and a 2,400-year-old giant mushroom in Oregon is considered the largest organism on Earth at a whopping 2,200 acres –almost one acre for every year of existence!

An A.I.-generated scene featuring today’s holidays, albeit with some interesting choices

The creation prompt was: “a female (since I chose male last time -2 Sundays back) postal worker making homemade soup with stuffed mushrooms in a modern kitchen featuring the USPS color theme.” It could have been tweaked for a slightly better outcome, but I always find it interesting how A.I. interprets a prompt.
